THE VISUAL ARTS is where an artist uses MEDIA (materials, images, signs and symbols) and the available TECHNOLOGY to communicate about the self as expression, or the world as narrative or propaganda, promotion, illusion, imagination, teaching or prediction.
The Visual Arts are about art for society, art for the self, art for religion, art for profit and art for art’s sake.
Types of Visual arts are as varied as media, subject matter and technology allow.
Art can be painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, computer and digital graphics, architecture, ceramics and Visual Design which covers the more functional works of art.
The Visual Arts has building blocks called the
Elements of Design or Composition and these elements are composed according to the guidelines called Principles of Design or Composition.

The Visual Arts can be emotional- how the artist or audience feels (subjective) or rational or makes you think (structural) it can be about environment physical or cultural, or it can be a mixture of all.
The Visual Arts can be made or looked at from these different points of view or FRAMES.
The Frames
The Frames are used to make, or look at an art work, from different points of view.

The CULTURAL FRAME where the cultural environment in which the artist has developed subject matter, conventions, style and technique, is explored by the artist and audience.
The POST-MODERN FRAME, where the artist in contemporary times uses the non-conventional, the appropriated and recontextualisated to present art, meaningful to a technologically sophisticated audience.
Appropriated means borrowed. To take an image from one source and use it else where with a new meaning.
Recontextualised means, given a new context or meaning by changing the surroundings of an image or word.
The SUBJECTIVE FRAME, where the personal, emotive qualities are examined, or how the artist has used the elements and principles to convey feelings, personal responses or imaginings to the audience.
The STRUCTURAL FRAME, where the form, media, techniques and how the work is composed using the elements and Principles of Design is examined. From the Structural viewpoint or frame we look at what, where, when, why and how an artwork is made.
